Puppets

The Prince from Thailand
These are most of my Mum's puppet collection.
See 3 more pics on my Flickr pages.

The one above is Thai, below are a Sicilian knight, a conducter from England, four Javanese rod puppets, and King Charles IV from Czechoslovakia. I've been to see a few puppet shows in Brighton, and if done really well they can be utterly magical and captivating. Long live the art of Puppetry.

Oh wow I love your King Charles IV from Czechoslovakia! How old is he and when was he made? I have a collection of heads from before WWII because their clothes didn't survive being in an attic in Vienna during the war. The King has the same character as yours. Is the Sicilian Knight paper mache? His head looks more like how mine were constructed.

He's not that old Anon, Mum bought him in the late 90s, he was new looking, although based on old style. The Sicilian knight has a wooden head. He's not normal puppet sized - a smaller version. I sometimes think my head is made of papier mache. How did you come by the collection of heads?

Dad was born in the Bohemian Forest and made his first income with being the women and evil characters in puppet shows for children in homes around Lower Austria. He designed them but of course was influenced by his childhood place of upbringing. I'll post a link to a photograph on an old blog ... just have to find it :)

The king is in the third photo.

I was wrong, the heads were stored from WWII in an attic and retrieved a lot later after the war. Most of the attached materials were attached by my sister and I in the 90s :)

That's a very fine collection of heads, there's some funny expressions on those faces - love 'em. Did your Dad move on and put the 'al' in Austria when WWII came on?

Heehee yes, fine collection of heads };-}
Dad ended up here way after the war all on his lonesome as a lithographer. He's the only one from that line in Oz :)
Imagine, each one of your Mum's puppets has a story of its own to tell!
